Why Mindfulness is an Important Word to Understand

Georgia Dunstan-Brown

We live in a world that rapidly speeds past us; technology is developing at an alarming rate, people want things here and now and we’re always racing from A to B...

When do we ever stop to take a moment for ourselves?

When you come home from work for the day, do you really step away from it and leave work at work? Or do you continue to check and reply to emails, even though you know you probably won’t get a reply until morning?

Mindfulness is a word that gets thrown around, but it’s a really important word to understand, especially if you’re prone to living the ‘fast’ life.

According to its definition, it talks about: “a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.”

To focus on what your body is doing, what your breathing is doing and what thoughts are going through your mind, really helps for understanding your purpose.

If you’re stressed from work, take a breath, stand still and feel your feet connected to the ground. Will your stresses mean anything in 10 years time? Will you look back on this day when work got a bit much and feel like it contributed heavily to your life?

The real answer is no. To practice mindfulness, you’ve got to understand that your body does so much to keep you alive, sometimes you should reward it by not loading it with little things that don’t matter and instead, taking some time out for yourself.

But in a busy world, how do you do that?

You could try yoga, meditation, putting your phone away for a day, going for a walk by yourself and hanging out with loved ones.

By doing these types of activities it promotes a healthy work-to-life balance and it will really help you to understand that sometimes work shouldn’t be given the stress or the pressure that it deserves, instead, leave work at work and come home and focus on what really matters - yourself and your loved ones.
