2019 Web Design Trends

Team Kuvio

2019 is already more than halfway over (like what?) and we thought this was a good time to round-up some of the web design trends that have really taken off this year. Of course this list is just a few of the trends we’ve seen, but we think it fun to talk about these trending topics.

  1. 3-D animation

The world isn’t flat and now neither are web designs. This is a way that designers can further blur the line between the real and digital worlds. The depth and realism popularized by these types of designs puts them at the center of many recent designs. A popular way to feature 3-D design elements is to add them to a flat, otherwise simple design to make them more interesting to viewers.

  1. Outlined type

This typography trend, outlined letters with no fill just the background color, is eye-catching and pretty.  The viewer will have to work a little harder to decipher what the text says, with the eye following their shapes, which makes the branding more memorable.

  1. Brutalism

This trend has been on the rise for a few years and it is not slowing down. This in your face design style is reminiscent of the grunge style of the 1990’s. Sometimes this can design style can become dizzying, but when executed well it can leave a long lasting impression. You can check out some examples of this type of design here.

  1. Inclusive design

This is a trend we are really passionate about and are so happy to see it becoming more popular. When designing a web page, taking the time to consider different times of users and who they will interact with the page is an important extra step that makes your website accessible to all. 1. Minimalism

Seemingly in conflict with the brutalism trend we previously discussed, another segment of sites that uses minimalistic style is on the rise. One of the positives of this style is that the fewer elements there are on a web page, the less the user will have to think about what they want to do and what information they need. This can be a great way to drive action on your website.

  1. Thumb friendly navigation

It’s no secret to web designers that more traffic now comes from mobile devices than from computers. As a result, designers have begun to take into account the usability of websites on mobile, especially as phone screens continue to grow. It may be simple, but considering whether or not a user will be able to use a feature comfortably with their thumb can make a huge difference in the user experience.

  1. Video

Studies have proven that videos increase engagement on web pages, therefore, it is natural that web designers are looking for ways to integrate videos seamlessly into designs. Google search results now show videos above web pages for some queries so getting into video can increase the reach of your website.

  1. Microinteractions

These small features are meant to surprise users and improve their experience. For example, that satisfying mini vibration you feel when you refresh your Instagram feed is an example of a microinteraction. These types of features are becoming more and more common as a way of keeping users on a page and making a website more memorable.

  1. Organic shapes

Imperfect and asymmetrical shapes can help elements pop out on a webpage. These types of designs can make pages feel less robotic and more human and natural. Designs like this can also create movement on the page.

  1. Virtual assistants

“Alexa, what is the weather going to be this weekend?” For more and more people, asking a virtual assistant, whether it be Alexa, Google, or another product, has become a daily part of everyday life. Integrating websites to respond to queries through this method can bring your site more traffic and a higher SEO ranking.
