Is It Time for a New Logo?

Team Kuvio

Think of your favorite company and one of the first visuals that probably pops into your mind is their logo. A logo serves as the visual representation of a company. In one image it can help convey who the company is and what they stand for. Even if you have a great logo, it still needs to evolve with the times. For example, Slack recently made a logo change that received widespread publicity. However, they have successfully made the update and their new modern logo is now synonymous with their brand. But, how do you know if it is time for your company to make a change? Here are a few indicators:

Does your logo look good across different types of media?

A logo that was designed in the print age may not look good on mobile. Think about how your logo looks as an icon and on a mobile device. If it isn’t as eye-catching on a screen as it is in print, it is time for an upgrade.

Does your logo match your brand’s reputation?

Your logo should match the values that are associated with your brand. For example, if you run a company that is business-focused and professional you don’t want a colorful, playful logo.

Does your logo still fit the services you currently offer?

Businesses often need to pivot and evolve in order to survive. If your business has changed, did you update your logo to match what you now offer? If not, you could be confusing your customers and limiting your reach.

Is your logo scalable?

Does your logo still look good when presented in many different sizes? If it was designed before the time of the iPhone it may have details that are too small to appear when your logo is smaller. Going forward, if the whole logo isn’t scalable there may be certain elements that are and that help maintain your brand identity.

Is your logo timeless?

If your logo was meant to be very trendy when you designed it, then it may not have remained in style as it aged. Often, logos that will better stand the test of time are more simple.

Does your logo live up to your competition’s logo?

Check out the logos of your competition to see how it compares to yours. If your logo blends in amongst the pack or if it stands out in a bad way, it may be time to try something new.

Do you receive compliments on it?

If you aren’t hearing positive feedback about your logo it likely isn’t resonating with your customers. Companies are shifting more and more to emphasize design (for example, think of Apple). This is going to help you stand out.

Is your logo memorable?

Your logo doesn’t just help explain who you are, it also helps customers remember you. Your logo should be unique and interesting enough that you are not quickly forgotten.

If the points above made you feel like your logo could use an update, you may be feeling unsure how to get started. You can design your logo yourself, or you may consider hiring a designer to help. In this case, if you have a few mockups that show your vision they can often help you land on a polished finished product.
