How to Stay Productive

Georgia Dunstan-Brown

If you work remotely, you understand how disciplined you have to be to ensure you do your best work. On days when it’s cold and you don’t want to get out of bed, or if you’re feeling poorly, it can be sometimes hard to push past these obstacles to head to your computer.

If you struggle to be productive when it comes to working, here are some tips to make it easier to tick off your tasks for the day:

Create a Spotify Playlist

Having a good playlist is the best way to get your day started. Spotify allows you to find a playlist for any mood and for anything you might be doing. I find the Focus playlists are good if you need some background music. Otherwise, make a playlist of your own that includes your favourite artists so you can sing along as you work.

Watch Youtube Videos for Tips

You’ll find that a lot of Youtubers work from home if Youtube is their full-time job. Some Youtubers have even posted about how they work from home, so if you’re a visual learner, here’s a couple of videos to get you started.

Have a clear and clean workspace

If you’re working on an unmade bed or your desk has rubbish littered all over it, it’s going to distract you. Before you sit down to work, clear your workspace and make it a pleasant place . Maybe light a candle or two to help you relax and work.

Eliminate any other possible distractions

If you live with other people, let them know that you’re working. Maybe put a sign up on your door or let them know in advance. If you live with good people, then they’ll help you not get distracted. Or if you live in a busy, noisy area, take yourself to a place that’s going to be quiet like your local library.

Create a routine

You’re either a morning person or a night owl, so utilise the times that you find yourself with the most energy. Set a time each day for when you’re going to sit down and work; also make sure to give yourself breaks! Try the 90 minute to 10 minute rule. Work 90 minutes and then give yourself a 10 minute break to reset.

Stay hydrated

When you’re thirsty, you won’t have the energy to work. Drinking water will help you feel energised and keep you focused.

Block websites that will distract you

If you love Facebook or Twitter, you know how easy it is to waste hours scrolling through your feed. To help you stay off these kinds of sites, try use website blocker apps where you can input a schedule of when you’re not allowed on Facebook. Here are some to try:

  • Cold Turkey Blocker getcoldturkey.com
  • Self Control App
  • Stay Focused
